Being An Only Child?
Tuesday, September 16, 2008 @ 6:38 PM

Are you an only child? If yes, do you like being one or would you rather have a brother or a sister? If you already have one (two, three...), are you happy to have them by your side?

Personally, I have got one older brother and two younger step-sisters. But I only see my sisters every second weekend. Yes, it's complicated. I think I would not be able to stay sane if I wouldn't have my brother, and I'm also relieved that I have someone to talk about "girly" stuff, too. I bet our holidays would be sooo boring if we wouldn't have such a wierd family with lots of different people. I remember being pitied by classmates in elementary school, because of having step-sisters. At first, it was hard to accept them and I'm sure that they felt the same way, too. But I've known them for about 10 years now, and they are a part of my world, so I don't need any commiseration. :/

If you are an only child, don't you feel lonely at times? Or do you think you are better off alone? I wonder what kind of person would I be if I'd have to live without my brother and sisters. Wierd. But interesting! Enjoying the attention of your parents, having even more friends (it's a fact that only children have more - I've made a small research). Some of them don't have to do so many jobs around the house, and another good point is that... you get to eat all the popcorn/chips/whatever in the packet!

However, there is no one else to blame if something goes wrong and there is too much pressure, as well. And here comes that part again with being alone at weekends and holidays.

"Parents of only children have more time to focus on the general aspects of child development and learning issues and can give their child that individual attention that makes such a difference. Studies have proven that only children often do better in life for the same reasons that first-borns do. First-borns have their parents’ individual attention for those important first few years and therefore benefit from greater stimulation. As a result, first-borns are often higher achievers in later life."

I don't think that there is a "better" situation when it comes to being or not being an only child. We have to deal with life in our ways, anyway, no matter how many people are around us. And both of them come with so many advantages and disadvantages. Troublesome.
